Balancing Sun Protection and Skin Ageing

Sunlight is a natural part of life and, in moderation, plays an important role in overall health. However, when it comes to the skin, the conversation around sun exposure is often oversimplified.
On one side, there is messaging that suggests all sun exposure is harmful. On the other, a more relaxed approach that overlooks the long-term effects of daily UV exposure.
The reality sits somewhere in the middle. Understanding the relationship between sun protection and skin ageing is key to maintaining long-term skin health.

From a skin health perspective, repeated exposure over time can contribute to pigmentation, dehydration, loss of firmness, premature ageing, and longer-term cellular damage, even when you are not burning.
Why SPF Alone Is Not Enough
A recent white paper from Environ highlights an important shift in how we should think about sun protection. While SPF has long been used as the primary measure of protection, it only tells part of the story.
SPF measures protection against UVB — the type of ultraviolet radiation most closely associated with sunburn.
However, UVA makes up the majority of UV radiation reaching the skin. It penetrates more deeply and is a key contributor to oxidative stress, collagen breakdown, pigmentation changes, and visible skin ageing.
It is also important to recognise that UVA exposure is not limited to sunny days or time spent outdoors.
It can pass through glass, meaning exposure continues:
on cloudy days
while driving
and even when indoors near windows
The Misunderstanding Around High SPF
There is a common belief that higher SPF always equals better protection.
In reality, the difference in UVB protection between SPF 15, 30 and 50 is relatively small. Higher SPFs can often create a false sense of security, particularly when sunscreen is not applied correctly, not applied in sufficient amounts, or not reapplied throughout the day.
Focusing on SPF alone can therefore be misleading.
True photoprotection should consider:
UVA exposure
daily environmental stress
and the overall health and resilience of the skin
Why Daily Skincare Matters Just As Much
This is where daily skincare becomes just as important as sunscreen.
Ingredients such as vitamin A and antioxidants play a central role in supporting the skin’s natural defence systems.
Antioxidants help neutralise the free radicals generated by UV exposure, while vitamin A supports healthy skin function, repair, and long-term resilience.
When used consistently, this approach helps to:
strengthen the skin
improve its tolerance to environmental exposure
support visible skin health and longevity over time
A More Complete Approach to Sun Protection and Skin Ageing
Effective sun protection is not about avoiding the sun entirely. It is about taking a balanced, informed approach that supports the skin over the long term.
In simple terms, good sun protection should:
protect against both UVA and UVB
support the skin’s natural defence systems
reduce oxidative stress caused by daily exposure
help preserve the skin’s strength, clarity, and longevity
It is also important to recognise that more is not always better in the way people assume. Very high SPF numbers can create a false sense of security if not used correctly.
What matters most is consistency, correct application, and a broader approach to skin health.
Supporting Your Skin for the Long Term
At The Beauty Place, we take a balanced and evidence-based approach to sun protection.
This means:
avoiding sunburn
protecting the skin daily
being especially mindful during periods of stronger exposure
and supporting the skin with ingredients that strengthen its resilience over time
This approach aligns with a more modern understanding of skincare — one that focuses not only on preventing immediate damage, but on preserving long-term skin health, function, and appearance.
