Medically referred to as Telangiectasia but commonly known as broken capillaries, red veins or spider veins.

This condition can develop in anyone at any age and can be treated quickly and effectively with the right advice and treatment. Facial thread veins are not dangerous but they can become worse and affect your confidence if left untreated.

What are facial thread veins?

Facial thread veins are tiny, dilated blood capillaries that occur close to the surface of the skin. They are usually found on more exposed areas of the skin like the nose and chin. Thread veins look like thin red lines, which become darker as they get wider and deeper, sometimes appearing purple or blue. They materialise when blood vessels become enlarged, which cause the veins to appear broken.

What are the causes of facial thread veins?

The causes of facial thread veins are many and varied and can occur across all ages. Common causes can be overexposure to the sun, drastic changes in environment, excessive alcohol consumption, hormonal changes and sudden changes in pressure such as severe vomiting or sneezing. They may also be simply genetic and part of natural skin ageing.

People with Rosacea often find they suffer from facial thread veins as the skin is red and flushed.

How can facial thread veins be treated?

At The Beauty Place, we effectively treat facial thread veins simply and easily using Lynton IPL (intense pulsed light, similar to laser) treatment or by Thermolysis, using advanced electrolysis.

Both treatments are a safe, effective way to banish thread veins.

Which treatment option is best for you will be determined during consultation.

Thermolysis using advanced electrolysis generates micro-bursts of high-frequency energy, which is released through the tip of the micro-probe and delivered directly to the tiny spider vein. The heat causes the blood in the vessel to coagulate, then the thread vein gradually dissolves and is removed through the body’s natural immune system, leaving the skin smooth and clear.

IPL is similar to laser treatment. However, a laser focuses just one wavelength of light at your skin, while IPL releases light of many different wavelengths, like a photo flash. The light from IPL is more scattered and less focused than a laser. IPL penetrates down to the second layer of your skin (dermis) without harming the top layer (epidermis), so it causes less damage to your skin.

The intense pulse of light is directed at the veins causing them to heat up very quickly. This heat will cause the vein to break down and collapse in on itself. The damaged vessel then gradually dissolves and is removed through the body’s natural immune system, leaving the skin smooth and clear.

It is also possible to remove Blood Spots (medically referred to as Campbell De Morgan or Cherry Angioma) and Spider Naevi (Telangiectasia Angioma - central dilated blood vessels with small capillaries radiating from it), using the same methods.

What is the treatment process and how many sessions will I need?

The first stage in facial thread vein treatment is consultation. During this time, the area to be treated will be examined and after discussing relevant medical details and treatment suitability we will advise on the best treatment plan for you.

Patch testing of the area is then carried out to determine optimal treatment parameters and skin reaction, ensuring the safest, most effective treatment for you.

In some cases, results can be achieved after one treatment but we generally recommend up to three treatments for maximum results.

We allow 2-4 weeks between each treatment depending on skin health, age and healing capabilities.

How long does each treatment take?

Depending on the size of the area to be treated, treatment time usually takes around 15 minutes.

What is the cost of treatment for facial thread veins?

Treatment is typically between £130 and £160.

Initial consultation, including patch testing and aftercare product is £20. This will be taken as a deposit to confirm your appointment.
