Milia (the plural of ‘Milium’) are small, hard, white raised bumps or spots, which lie superficially under the skin.

They are normally found around the eye area and cheeks but can appear anywhere on the face or body. It is very common to have several milia appear in clusters.

What are Milia?

Milia are small, benign cysts containing keratin (skin protein) that becomes trapped beneath the epidermis. Unlike a whitehead or spot, milia feel quite hard and do not have any redness or inflammation as you might expect with whiteheads or acne-related spots.

They are very common in newborn babies and are often referred to as ‘milk spots’, which resolve naturally within a few weeks or months and are not a cause for concern.

Cell turnover slows down as we get older, making mature skin more susceptible to recurring milia. Using an Environ daily moisturiser containing active levels of vitamin A is a great way of increasing skin cell rejuvenation, thus helping to prevent milia from forming and keeping the skin healthy.

Milia are not contagious or harmful in any way, but some people may feel self-conscious about them, especially if they are on an area of the skin which is very visible, such as the face. Milia can sometimes take a long time to disappear naturally and in general, the longer the milia have been established the more compressed and larger the keratinised centre becomes.

What causes Milia?

The exact causes of milia are unknown but it is understood that sebum and skin cells are compressed beneath the surface of the skin, within a blind duct.

Milia are rarely associated with hereditary factors, although certain skin types may have a predisposition to their development. They tend to occur in dry skin, likely due to the dehydrated state, or a build-up of excess skin cells that then trap sebum. A dry skin can either be hereditary, or caused by a range of possible environmental factors such as temperature, weather (e.g. windy climates) or skincare routine.

Milia are also linked to the use of cosmetic products on the face which are too rich, strong, abrasive or unsuitable for your skin type.

Similarly, the use of certain types of sunscreen can also cause milia. The majority of sunscreens contain chemical ingredients, which can irritate, dry and block the pores of the skin. It is recommended that a ‘Physical’ sunscreen, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide be used, as they are non-irritating and non-comedogenic (does not block the pores). We highly recommend Environ RAD SPF.

At The Beauty Place, we are skin specialists and skin health is paramount for us. We always treat the underlying cause of skin concerns, not just the symptoms, so this will also be taken into account during your treatment to ensure you achieve the best results and reduce the chance of skin problems reoccurring.

Research is divided on whether there is a correlation between the occurrence of milia and diets with high levels of cholesterol content. Long-term, excessive vitamin C consumption is also an associated cause.

Can I remove Milia myself?

It is not recommended that you remove milia yourself. Trying to squeeze or pick at milia can cause the area to become inflamed, bruised or infected, because they do not ‘pop’ in the same way as a pimple or whitehead.

It is recommended that milia are removed professionally through a simple, minor procedure. To avoid infection, the treatment should be carried out in a safe clinical environment with sterile equipment.

How can Milia be treated?

At The Beauty Place, we quickly, safely and effectively treat milia using one of two methods once the area has been carefully cleaned.

Diathermy - this treatment aims to utilise the high-frequency current to desiccate the fatty, keratinised tissue of the milia, resulting in its breakdown and dispersal.

Needle extraction - a sterile needle is used to create a tiny incision and the contents of the milia are carefully extracted.

How many treatments will I need?

Generally, only one treatment is needed to treat the milia but some stubborn cysts may require an additional treatment.

How can I prevent Milia?

At The Beauty Place, we are skin specialists and skin health is paramount for us.

We always treat the underlying cause of skin concerns, not just the symptoms, so this will also be taken into account during your treatment to ensure you achieve the best results and reduce the chance of skin problems reoccurring.

Treatment with us is very effective but it is essential that you take care of your skin in the correct way, on a daily basis, to ensure optimum skin health and appearance.

If you are prone to milia - and even if you’re not! - adopting a prescribed, daily skincare regime, recommended by a skincare professional, is one of the best things you can do to keep your skin healthy and looking its best.

Skin care starts internally at the dermis, the deepest layer of the skin, where skin cells are made. No topical products on the planet can reach this layer so we have to treat internally. This is where skin supplements come in. Even the healthiest of diets often lack in the nutrients that keep skin in optimum health so we recommend using skin specific supplements from Advanced Nutrition Programme. Skin Vit A+ and Skin Omegas are great for milia-prone skins.

A suitable cleanser, used twice a day, will remove make-up, oil and dirt from your skin. Your cleanser should be suitable for your skin type. It needs to be gentle but effective, and free from SLS (sodium laureth sulfate), colourants and fragrances that can harm your skin. We recommend Environ Hydra-Intense Cleanser.

Exfoliating with a liquid exfoliant, such as lactic acid, will help remove dead skin cells and stop them from building up on the skin in the pores.

Avoid harsh, granular exfoliators, as these are too aggressive on the skin and do more harm than good in the long-run. Environ Botanical Infused Moisturing Toner is a great way of gently exfoliating your skin daily.

A moisturiser containing active vitamin A will also help to control skin cell build-up, as it encourages new cell turnover. Vitamin A is THE most important ingredient for the health of your skin and should be used twice daily for optimum skin health and appearance.

We recommend Environ AVST or Vita-Peptide moisturisers, as unlike cosmetic products, these professional formulations contain active ingredients that work on the deeper layers of your skin, to achieve the best possible results.

How much does Milia treatment cost?

Treatment typically costs £80. If numerous Milia require £110 per treatment, depending on the time needed for your appointment. Consultation and patch testing is required, although if you only have one or two Milia, these can be treated in full as part of this.

Consultation is £20 and is inclusive of your aftercare product.
